Barrier based risk management and bowties
The bowtie methodology is a barrier-based technique that enables organizations to effectively manage risks. This barrier-based risk management method is a qualitative methodology that takes parentage from Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) and Event Tree Analysis (ETA). The complexity of understanding these methods was greatly scaled down by the introduction of the Swiss Cheese metaphor by James Reason. The Swiss Cheese Model, along with the FTA and ETA, forms an important background for the bowtie method. Thus, barrier-based risk models, and in particular BowTie diagrams, are increasingly used to assess and evaluate key risks that can influence critical business processes like new process introduction, management of change, and so on in terms of reliability, efficiency, safety, quality, or reputation.
Thus, the barrier-based approach for risk management reinforces the process of identifying risks, implementing barriers to contain risks, monitoring barrier performance through the auditing process, and determining the causes for failures during the investigation process, enabling a cycle of continuous improvement. The organizational aspects address issues such as common organizational causes, degrading of multiple barriers simultaneously, which is not addressed in traditional risk management. Hence, this approach is more promising for sustainable and improved organizational performance.
